New Roblox chatbot with artificial intelligence Roblox Assistant helps create virtual worlds

Roblox introduced an artificial intelligence-based chatbot called Roblox Assistant, which allows you to create virtual worlds on the gaming platform. The company first showed the results of the solution at the Roblox Developers Conference in early 2023.

The new tool builds on previously announced features that help you create virtual assets and write code using natural language commands.

Using Roblox Assistant, developers will be able to add hints to create virtual environments. In one demo, the tool is told that they want to create a game in the setting of ancient ruins, and the chatbot adds moss-covered stones and ruined buildings. In this way, the world can be supplemented with other objects.

Roblox will receive assets from its trading platform or from the library of visual resources, company representative Roman Skuratovsky shared.

Roblox CTO Daniel Sturman said he's skeptical about generative AI, but he sees Roblox Assistant as an interesting use of the technology. According to him, the tool can create basic game behaviors, such as teleporting players to the desired location after touching a door. Roblox Assistant also helps with coding and answers questions about developing on the platform.

Sturman notes that the chatbot will be launched at the end of this year or early next year. In the future, Roblox Assistant will be able to create complex gameplay and even 3D models, explained the company’s technical director.

Another AI-powered innovation will allow Roblox users to create avatars from images and text prompts, making characters more like players. The release of this tool will take place in 2024.

Another solution on Roblox uses AI to moderate voice conversations in real time, which should help reduce toxicity on the platform. The company began testing the tool in August, and will soon introduce its English version. By the end of the year, the option will be localized in Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese.

Also at RDC 2023, Roblox announced that it wants to expand beyond being an app for kids. The company's CEO, David Baszucki, promised that within five years, thousands of adults would meet and form relationships on the platform. Previously, Roblox added games that only people over 17 years old can participate in.

For the next half of the decade, Basuki made the following predictions:

  • The Fortube 500 company will use Roblox's expertise in recruiting;
  • Schools will begin implementing a full K-12 curriculum with Roblox, including language courses and virtual field trips;
  • Roblox employees will spend more time using the gaming platform for remote meetings;
  • The company will start sharing a courtesy metric that will increase for most players;
  • Some developers will make more money selling physical goods on Roblox than virtual ones;
  • Roblox will become a private communication channel for the whole family;
  • The platform will determine the best fashion designer who has no experience in traditional fashion;
  • In Roblox, a musician will perform to an audience of more than 1 million people, using a smartphone to capture movements;
  • Roblox will be valued at $1 billion.
